Milestones

  1. 1950s

    Field testing begins

China begins field testing of materials corrosion.

  2. 1960s

    Discipline founded

Corrosion science starts at USTB, with continuous teaching and research ever since.

  3. 1980s

    Station network

With national support, a nationwide network of atmospheric, seawater and soil corrosion field stations is built.

  4. 1985

    UNDP center

With UNDP approval, USTB establishes its Corrosion and Protection Center — now one of the world’s three major corrosion research centers.

  5. 2011

    National platform

The National Field Observation and Research Platform for Materials Corrosion is accredited by the Ministry of Science and Technology and enters service.

  6. 2019

    National data center

The National Materials Corrosion and Protection Data Center is approved — the only one of the first 20 national science data centers led by a university.

  7. 2020s

    National facility

USTB leads construction of MSAF, a national research facility for materials service safety, with over RMB 1.5 billion invested.

  8. 2024

    Corrosion Congress

Hosts the 22nd International Corrosion Congress, attended by about 1,500 delegates from 43 countries.

Serving national needs

01

Corrosion-resistant steels

More than 60 new corrosion-resistant steels adopted by 30+ major steelmakers; 95%+ market share in marine-grade and weathering bridge steel, at 100-million-tonne scale, used in containers, shipbuilding, wind power and high-speed rail.

02

Major engineering projects

Key corrosion problems solved for major projects in bridges, energy, transport and communications; the China–Maldives Friendship Bridge, in one of the world’s harshest marine environments, has performed well since opening in 2018.

03

Data and platforms

The world’s largest corrosion database and a global monitoring network, co-built with partners such as State Grid and PipeChina; 141 user organizations in China and abroad served in 2024.

International influence

  • One of the world’s three major corrosion research centers, twice recognized as an outstanding corrosion research institution
  • Networked corrosion monitoring adopted as a standard technique by the European Federation of Corrosion and used in 20 countries including Germany, Czechia, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Singapore
  • Founded the International Materials Degradation Society and built the Belt and Road Corrosion Science Data Alliance
  • Featured by Nature as representative work in “how materials science is helping to transform China into a high-tech economy”
  • Hosted the 22nd International Corrosion Congress in 2024 with about 1,500 delegates from 43 countries
  • Home of the secretariat of the Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection; 8 major international corrosion awards
